New Project Director for the Nuclear Information Service

NIS Directors are delighted to announce that Dr. Peter Burt, an experienced and knowledgeable disarmament worker, is to take over as NIS Project Director. With a doctorate in Applied Biology, Peter has an impressive track record as a researcher, trainer and lecturer in environmental, human rights and disarmament disciplines, and has worked as a consultant with NIS over the past year. Peter will be in place from May 2009 for a transitional hand-over period with the retiring Director, Di McDonald.

"Peter has a track record of effective analysis and reporting on safety and developments at AWE Aldermaston and Burghfield and is just the sort of person we want to take NIS into its 16th year."

Evelyn Parker, Chair of NIS

NIS is an established organisation, providing information on a wide range of military nuclear matters and fostering debate in the South on nuclear disarmament and related safety and environmental issues for the past fifteen years. It provides information about AWE, nuclear transport, submarines and related legal issues to MPs, NGOs, academics, the media. campaigners and the general public.

"This is an exciting challenge at a time when disarmament is on the international and national agenda. If the cost of renewing Trident proves unjustifiable, there will be significant changes at AWE. My job will be to make sure that information reaches the public in a timely way and to monitor safety, transport and US management decisions at AWE.
Peter Burt, NIS

The NIS office is moving from Southampton to 85 Southampton Street Reading from 1st June 2009.
