Action plan exposes difficulties in response to 2010 fire at AWE

HMS VENGEANCE ENTERS DEVONPORT FOR REFIT
Babcock International Group has been awarded a contract by the Ministry of Defence for a £350 million three-and-a-half year refit of the Trident submarine HMS Vengeance at the Devonport Dockyard in Plymouth.

Report warns that MoD nuclear safety is deteriorating
The safety of the MoD's nuclear programmes is under threat in the medium term from a lack of finance and suitably competent staff, according to the Defence Nuclear Environment and Safety Board (DNESB), which oversees nuclear and radiological safety and environmental protection in the MoD.

NEW EDITION OF MoD GUIDANCE ON NUCLEAR WEAPONS EMERGENCIES PUBLISHED
The Ministry of Defence has published a new version of its 'Local Authority and Emergency Services Information (LAESI)' guidelines to provide advice to civil emergency services on action to take in the event of an emergency during the transport of a nuclear weapon or military special nuclear materials.

Exercise Solar Victory 08: Nuclear convoy counter-terrorism exercise
The 'Solar Victory' exercise took place in October 2008 and was organised by the Ministry of Defence Police in the South Yorkshire area. The exercise was part of the Home Office 'New Salesman' series of counter-terrorism exercises, and the exercise was based on a scenario relating to a terrorist attack on a nuclear weapons convoy travelling through the area.
The exercise brought together 265 delegates from around 20 agencies over two days, with the first day testing crisis management issues and the second day focusing on dealing with the aftermath of the incident.
