Mr. Hancock: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence pursuant to the answer of 17 December 2007, Official Report, column 1035W, on AWE Burghfield, how many safety shortfalls (a) were identified by the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII) during the risk assessment, (b) were resolved by the delayed 27 September 2007 target date, (c) will shortly be resolved and (d) will remain unresolved under the current single operation licensing regime imposed by the NII for each warhead handling operation; and if he will make a statement. Objections to Components Manufacturing Facility over-ruled
In July 2007 NIS submitted a series of requests for information under the Freedom of Information Act asking for action plans and post-exercise review documents relating to any emergency exercise held in 2006/2007 for AWE Aldermaston or AWE Burghfield.
In response to this request, eight documents were released by the Health and Safety Executive’s Nuclear Directorate. This report summarises the documents and draws conclusions on the adequacy of emergency arrangements at AWE sites.

A report published by Nuclear Information Service questions the safety of ageing nuclear warhead assembly and disassembly facilities at the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) Burghfield, near Reading in Berkshire.

AWE Public Relations Offensive
A Special Nuclear Materials (SNM) cargo left AWE Burghfield on Monday 11th June in High Security Vehicle (HSV) Number 4. With only two non-military escort vehicles, it traveled at 60mph to RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire where it met a waiting aircraft on the runway. As soon as the cargo was transferred by fork-lift truck into its side loading bay, the plane took off for the USA. Nuclear warhead materials are exchanged between the UK and USA under the 1958 Mutual Defence Agreement.
