The Ministry of Defence has published a new version of its 'Local Authority and Emergency Services Information (LAESI)' guidelines to provide advice to civil emergency services on action to take in the event of an emergency during the transport of a nuclear weapon or military special nuclear materials.

Coulport nuclear weapons store to be privatised
AWE will head a commercial alliance that will take over operation of the site where the UK's nuclear weapons are stored from February 2012.
The private sector alliance, comprising of AWE as the prime contractor with Babcock and Lockheed Martin Strategic Systems (UK) as subcontractors, will undertake the highly sensitive role of managing Trident nuclear warheads and missiles stored at the Royal Naval Armaments Depot at Coulport, on Loch Long in Scotland.

A government advisory committee on radiation and health has concluded that there is no significant evidence of an association between the risk of childhood leukaemia and living in proximity to a nuclear power station.

AWE Burghfield planning permission conditional on HSE approval
West Berkshire Council's Eastern Area Planning Committee has agreed to renew planning permission for a Conventional Manufacturing Facility at the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) Burghfield – but only on condition that the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) confirms that it has no objections to the development on nuclear safety grounds in the light of the Fukushima nuclear accident.
