The two Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) sites in Berkshire have been included on a secret shortlist of sites where the Ministry of Defence (MoD) is thinking of dumping radioactive waste from defunct nuclear powered submarines, according to an authoritative report in a Scottish newspaper.
AWE INVESTMENT SPENDING ROCKETS TO £1 BILLION PER YEAR
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced future spending plans for the investment and construction programme at the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) in a low key Ministerial Statement issued during the Parliamentary summer recess. On 9th September 2009 Quentin Davies MP, Under Secretary of State and Minister for Defence Equipment and Support, announced:
Hidden amongst the small print of parliamentary minutiae and issued during the summer recess, the Ministry of Defence has released a Ministerial Statement announcing how much money will be spent at the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) on investment and upgrade work over the next three years.

The Nuclear Awareness Group (NAG), based in Reading, has lodged a complaint with West Berkshire Council over the handling of a planning application at AWE in Burghfield by outlining their concerns about the way plans to build a new nuclear warhead facility were handled.
