No military waste is classified as HLW. Spent Fuel from submarine reactors is stored in dedicated Ministry Of Defence (MOD) ponds at BNFL Sellafield, Cumbria but is not listed in the Dept. of the Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) Inventory of all nuclear waste.

The Minister for Environment and Rural Development (Ross Finnie): We welcome the Ministry of Defence's decision not to progress options for storage or disposal of radioactive waste from redundant submarines until after the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management has reported.

Public consultation over decommissioned submarines
Historically, it was planned to dump whole decommissioned nuclear
submarines at sea but this was subsequently prohibited by the London
Dumping Convention. Afloat storage has been demonstrated as a
cost-effective method of interim storage, but this had taken place under
the assumption that a permanent disposal facility would be available
early in the 21st century. As this is now highly unlikely, the MoD are
investigating alternative storage options for the medium term. These

Background to ISOLUS
In response to the announcement of the ISOLUS consultation, NIS convened a meeting of interest groups and NGOs to discuss the shared problem of site(s) selection for nuclear submarine waste storage. By July, a national network, called The Nuclear Submarine Forum (NSubF), was formally constituted. Its role is to link groups around potential waste stores, to ensure they all have the same information and to agree a policy.

ISOLUS announcement
The MoD are expected to announce this week (8th September) the preliminary proposals from industry to remove and “manage” the nuclear waste from decommissioned submarines. The storage sites for this waste is already controversial and the subject of a public consultation.
