Astute Class Submarine

Astute Class Submarine

The Royal Navy's largest and most powerful nuclear attack submarine

What we do

Many of the most exciting submarine projects in the world are undertaken right here, within our Submarine Solutions Business Group which is acknowledged worldwide as a centre of submarine excellence. BAE Systems Submarine Solutions is the prime contractor for the Astute class of nuclear-powered attack submarine under a contract worth £3.65 billion for the first three vessels.  A further order was received in 2007 which enabled work to start on Boat 4 in the class, Audacious.

Submarine Solutions is also part of the Aircraft Carrier Alliance, and will be responsible for the construction of the central module on each of the two new 65,000 tonne aircraft carriers announced by the Government.  The modules built at Barrow will each have a displacement of around 17,000 tonnes, equivalent to the Royal Navy assault ship HMS Bulwark delivered by the shipyard in 2004.

Preliminary engineering design work has also begun on the successor submarine deterrent platform which will replace the Vanguard class submarines currently in service.

The Barrow shipyard has built every submarine currently in service with the Royal Navy and in 2007 secured its first export contract for more than 20 years, to supply submarine pressure hull domes to the Navantia shipyard in Spain.

Your development

During the first two years of the Graduate Development Framework (GDF) scheme, we want you to develop by moving freely around the Business Group, and also by meeting all the requirements of professional accreditation as you proceed. Between you, you and your business mentor will develop a structured training plan, with each placement typically lasting three months.

You will certainly see the wider picture of submarine technology development – and it’s quite a picture. You may also have opportunities to work with suppliers and customers, and to further widen your experience through such extra-curricular activities as community work.

Professional qualifications

All of our graduates are encouraged to develop through professional accreditation. Our engineering programme is regarded as one of the very best in the industry, and is accredited to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA), the Institute of Engineering Technology (IET), the Institute of Physics (IoP), the Institute of Materials, Mining and Minerals (IoM3), and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST).

If you should focus on a more business-related career, you will be fully supported to achieve membership of the relevant professional institutions.

Locations

Besides our team in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, Submarine Business Group’s Astute and Swiftsure/Trafalgar class update teams are located at Farnborough in Hampshire and at Weymouth in Dorset. We also have Astute and Swiftsure/Trafalgar class integration facilities at Ash Vale in Surrey.

As part if the recruitment process for Submarines Solutions you will attend an assessment centre. If you are applying for Engineering, Nuclear or Manufacturing & Production roles you will also be invited to a technical interview at Barrow-in-Furness.
